Home Remedies for Children's COUGHS
- Being propped up with a pillow (placed under the
mattress in a baby's cot) can ease a cough which is made worse by lying down.
- Offer extra fluids such as water and diluted freshly
squeezed juices, as they will soothe the throat and help to loosen the mucus. Do not give milk, however, as this can increase the production of mucus.
- Don't let a baby become chilled, as this will aggravate
a cough. Sometimes coughs are better for fresh air, but others are aggravated by cold, dry atmospheres - be watchful when you take baby outdoors.
- Keep your baby or child away from smoky
atmospheres.
- Lavender can help to soothe all kinds of coughs and
is safe for babies under 6 months old. Gently massage the chest and back with diluted Lavender oil.
For babies over 6 months old: Eucalyptus or Tea Tree, 3 drops essence in 30 ml of Almond oil, can also be used.
For children over 6 years: combine any two of these essences together, for example Lavender and Eucalyptus.
- Place a few drops of lavender essence or blend onto
a tissue and tuck it into your child's pyjamas, night- dress or pillow case at night.
- Freshly squeezed lemon juice and honey in hot
water makes a soothing cough remedy.
- Cabbage and Brussels sprouts are reputedly good for
preventing and easing coughs.
- Use plenty of garlic and thyme in your cooking.
