Home Remedies for Children's COLDS
Colds are caused by hundreds of different cold viruses. Babies are particularly susceptible because they have yet to build up immunity to the many viruses in circulation. Breastfeeding gives babies a degree of protection, especially if mother already has some resistance to a particular cold virus.
Children often get one cold after another when they first start nursery or playschool, as they are constantly coming into contact with different strains of virus.
Natural remedies can be very effective at keeping colds at bay , as well as relieving their symptoms.
- Peppermint and Eucalyptus - blend the appropriate
number of drops of either (see below) in a base of Almond oil and massage into the chest and back. To benefit from the vapours, add the essences to the bath and use in a vaporizer in your child's bedroom overnight.
Appropriate number of drops Age Drops per 30 ml Base Oil Newborn to 2 months 1-2 drops 2 to 6 months 2-3 drops 6 to 12 months 3-4 drops 1 to 5 years 4-6 drops 5 to 7 years 6-10 drops 7 to 12 years 8-12 drops
For babies under 6 months: Eucalyptus only. Try adding 3 drops of essence to a small bowl of boiling water and place under baby's cot at night.
For children over 5: Black Pepper or Rosemary can also be used.
- You can to some extent protect babies and children
from catching someone else's cold by making a solution using 2 drops Peppermint and 2 drops Eucalyptus in 1/2 pint (300 ml) of water. Spray this around the house.
- When the first symptoms appear, try giving your
child a warm tisane of Lemon Balm and Chamomile flowers sweetened with honey.
- Garlic is a natural antibiotic which helps to combat
colds. During the winter, give 1 to 2 capsules a day as a preventative measure. Many children like the taste of garlic, so use liberally in cooking.
